New Community [14 Nov 2006|12:26am]

There is a new community for ndnz living in, from, or having connections to the land in what is now known as the Southeastern United States. All indigenous peoples are welcome. The hope is to reconnect with those who live elsewhere due to relocation and removal and network with Natives whom live close by, as well as share the unique Southeastern Nation cultures and ways including arts, food, traditions, songs, stories and much more.

Check out the Community link for more info and visit the entire community at se_ndnz.

Help!!! [24 Oct 2006|02:40pm]

I need help at my blog! Anyone interested in the whole blood quantum controversy? Interested in the topics of racism, "reverse discrimination", and mistreatment of non-enrolled Native descendants? My blog is about my life as a non-enrolled descendant of The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Many people, including family members of mine, have posted some pretty hateful things in my blog. Would love to see some encouraging comments to my posts. Please check out my blog and post.

Essay [05 Oct 2006|11:01am]

Indians, Solipsisms, and Archetypal HolocaustCollapse )

Phew done. In light of this essay (taken from Genocide of the Mind publised 1994) I'd like to mention that Christianity seem to help foster and encourage the genocide of a people and that even though Natives are largely ignored they are more likely to enlist than that of the Average American.

Was wondering if I should post a few of the essays that I have been reading lately. A few of them are rather interesting.

[30 Sep 2006|10:29am]

Hi, my name is James. I've recently been trying to learn more about the Native Americans and their ways. Geez I sound so stiff. I want to learn, to learn and set aside my ignorance in the customs and ways of the people who were here first. I want to help, yet fear that by helping that I may make things first, to speak and be heard.

I have been reading a book called the Genocide of the Mind written with who I hope are Native American authors. As I've read the book several glaring holes in the history that I have been shown to me, a history that I had used to live with in comfort. My heart aches for a truth omitted and lies heavy with wrongs that were done and still are being done.

I had actually started this with the intention of talking about my cousin but then figured that would be false. I started on this path when I started to be more active in a sub-culture. The furry sub-culture to be exact. I stepped further onto this path when I began to keep coming in contact with native americans.

Which brings me to the end I guess. I want to learn customs and ways. You learn customs and ways as a child, then I shall be a child and try to learn like one.

Hello Everyone! [06 Jul 2006|10:08am]

[ mood | calm ]

This community hasn't been really active lately, so I thought I would give it something fresh by introducing myself.
My name is Lauren, I'm 16 and I live in the suburbs of New York City. I am mixed race, including African-American, Hispanic, White and Cherokee. I think I identify a little more with being Cherokee than the others, though, because of my looks (people who look at me think I'm full-blooded Native American) and because I feel drawn towards nature-based religions. My Grandmother is the most Cherokee in my family, but because she wasn't raised by her parents it's been hard to trace her lineage back to someone on the Dawes roll so I can become and official tribe member.
Anyway, I hope this was a breath of life into this community!

My Tribal Space [11 Jan 2006|07:19am]

I logged into my Myspace and checked out my groups and found someone posted about Mytribalspace. It is like Myspace only for Natives. I looks like it is still quite new but I thought I would spread the word.

[ mood | optimistic ]

Hello! I was raised primarily white, as my father is white, and my mother's family lost their Cherokee traditons many generations ago. I always knew I was Cherokee, and considered myself Cherokee, but apart from a few powows, I had little to go on as to what that meant. My Aunt decided it was time to start getting back to our roots, and got the family registerd in the tribe. My mother did the geneaology to find out which clan we were from, and who we were decendents of. Aunt Rhonda began collecting Native artwork, and my grandfather started telling me the few stories he remembered.

But it's up to me to bring it all together. We are Cherokee in name now, but not necessarily in spirit. I have tried to search on the culture and legends of my people, but it is difficult, as most sites teach about the interaction our people have had with the white man. I subscribed to the Cherokee Phoenix, and bought an Introductin to the Cherokee language set.

I want to be able to tell someone that I am Cherokee with clear concious, knowing that even if my hair is blonde and my eyes are green I still live a life that would please my ancestors.

I was wondering if anyone could recomend websites or books and events to teach me more about being a Cherokee. Again, I am not interested in the interaction with the white man, so much as I am interested in the culture. Music and art recomendations are also more than welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Hello :) [13 Nov 2005|07:13pm]

[ mood | cheerful ]

Hello everyone, I'm Lynn.
I'm glad I found a community for Cherokees!
I myself and half Cherokee on my father's side [he is full].
I am also half Russian/Ukranian [hence Snegurochka].
My paternal grandfather was adopted off the Cherokee Reservation along with his twin sister when they were young. They moved to Alaska and other areas so trying to find any family information is hard. I also live in WA state and there is no Cherokees that I know of around.
I have been searching and trying to find all I can about spirituality, traditions and ways but it's hard.
I'm hoping my father's sister, who says she has the family info will be able to help.
Anyone just wanted to introduce myself.
Hope to see you all around and learn something :)
